State And Local Agencies Work Together For Safer Travel

New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Regional Director Mark Silo and State Police (NYSP) Troop "D" Commander Major Frank J. DeGennaro announce the locations for this year’s Aggressive Driving Targeted Enforcement Campaign. Oriskany Boulevard from the Utica City Line west to the intersection with Commercial Drive and the entire length of Commercial Drive from Oriskany Boulevard to Route 5 (Seneca Turnpike) will be the targeted areas. The campaign will begin on Tuesday, May 1, and continue through September. In addition to the State Police, the following local enforcement agencies will be participating in the program: the Oneida County Sheriff, Town of New Hartford Police, Town of Whitestown Police, Village of New York Mills Police and the Village of Yorkville Police. Enforcement will continue in the targeted locations at various times throughout the summer.

The State Police define an aggressive driver as "anyone who operates a motor vehicle in a selfish, bold or pushy manner – without regard for the rights or safety of the other users of our streets and highways." These drivers create an unsafe driving environment through their inconsiderate, self-centered driving habits and are responsible for hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries every year. Irresponsible driver behavior, congestion and increased travel times (particularly in urban areas) - coupled with reduced levels of enforcement are the primary factors resulting in aggressive driving.

The Department of Transportation, State Police and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) have joined together in an effort to reduce the incidence of aggressive driving through a program of engineering, education and enforcement. Read more at nysdot.gov.
